Help is Here

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid . . .  for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

We are in a difficult season. My husband is preaching the funeral of a young man this afternoon. Tomorrow we have another funeral. And two days after that I would attend a third funeral in another state if I could.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned during cancer is helping now in the present turmoil. “The Lord your God goes with you.” Of course I knew this verse before cancer. But I experienced it when I suffered trauma. We do have to go through terrible times. Just because God is with us doesn’t lessen the pain. But He helps us cope. He delivers grace I can’t explain. When we cry out to Him and acknowledge His presence, He gives us whatever we need to get us through. In my case, one time it was a vision of the activity of the angels – warrior-like angels – who were on duty for me. Another time I just fainted. Many times other verses came into my mind or were sent by text message from a friend. In each instance, I felt the distinct presence of the Lord. He was with me.

Even if a Christian does not recognize His presence, God is there, constantly working on our behalf.

The next few days will be rough, but help is here. Sitting next to me. Whispering in my ear. Covering my shoulders like a cashmere shawl.

If we didn’t face desperate situations, we would never experience this verse. In spite of the times I rejected this kind of truth because I didn’t want to suffer, didn’t want to need that experience, it has deepened my relationship with the Lord. These times come because we’re human. But because we belong to Jesus Christ, we can be strong and courageous. He is with us.
