Fear Not

(1)”But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. (2)When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.” Isaiah 43:1-2

Verse two was written on a lot of the cards I got during my chemo treatment. And it was true to a certain extent, although I think it requires taking it out of context to understand this verse in a literal sense. I was actually burned and scorched by the “fire” of the treatment, and some people do die from it. What we need to remember is that what God did for His people in the physical realm in the Old Testament, He does for us in the spiritual realm now. So, none of the physical tortures affected my spiritual walk and destiny. Nothing can keep me from the love of God.

That’s where we come back to verse one. It is literally true today. The Lord made me and you. He has redeemed you and calls you by your name. He hasn’t forgotten you. And He will preserve you through your terrors. My scars are physical and maybe yours are emotional. But we’re both scarred by what we’ve been through. No matter, God knows us and remembers and will bring us safely through.

Notice how verse two says, “when,” not “if.” There was never any doubt in God’s mind that we would suffer. Only denial in ours. We think these things aren’t supposed to happen to us. And when they do, we panic. These verses remind us that God has it all under control.

He knows your name. And the name of the loved one you lost. He won’t forget you or them. People might, but God won’t.

“Fear not.”
